Nonin Medical Announces Bluetooth® Oximeter Qualification and FCC Certification

Nonin Medical, Inc., developer and manufacturer of innovative pulse oximetry products and other medical monitoring technologies, announced that its next-generation wireless pulse oximeter has received FCC certification and completed the Bluetooth® qualification process. With the certification, Nonin becomes the first medical device manufacturer to create a Bluetooth-qualified pulse oximeter, a device that measures blood oxygen saturation. “Completing the certification and demonstrating our compliance with Bluetooth System Specifications brings this new compact, wrist-worn device close to market release,” said Nonin President and CEO Gary Tschautscher.

Bluetooth wireless technology enables short-range wireless data connections between devices. Applied to a pulse oximeter, it will eliminate the need for a wire between patient and monitor. The result will be greater flexibility and freedom of movement for both patient and healthcare provider. Nonin chose Bluetooth wireless technology because of its robust connection capability and data security safeguards.

In addition to extending Nonin’s product line, development of Bluetooth-enabled pulse oximetry will enable the company to offer wireless pulse oximetry to manufacturers of health monitoring products that measure a range of parameters, including blood oxygen saturation. Discussions on integrating the new technology into next-generation products are already underway with several manufacturers, according to Tschautscher.
